Ï㽶ÊÓƵ to Enhance Learning Assistant Program Fall 2023
June 26, 2023
MACOMB/MOLINE, IL - - Ï㽶ÊÓƵ has been on a mission to enhance its reputation as a top-tier educational institution. In 2017, Ï㽶ÊÓƵ introduced the Learning Assistant Program (LAP), a peer-based initiative aimed at promoting active and collaborative learning in the classroom. Since its inception, the program has yielded impressive results, including improved student grades and a significant uptick in Engineering program retention rates.
The LAP was specifically designed to ensure students remain engaged and focused on conceptual learning. Undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) receive weekly preparation and pedagogy courses to facilitate discussion among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings. The program encourages both faculty and students to be more mindful of the learning process, and provides tutors in the classroom to help students succeed.
Ï㽶ÊÓƵ is set to expand the LAP, with plans to include LAs throughout Calculus and Chemistry courses in Macomb starting this fall. Additionally, a recent NSF NOYCE grant has allowed Ï㽶ÊÓƵ to partner with Black Hawk Community College to introduce an LA program in chemistry, biology, physics, and calculus at their Moline campus.
“I’m so excited about our partnership with Black Hawk College and that Ï㽶ÊÓƵ’s Learning Assistant Program is expanding on our Macomb campus. Learning Assistant Programs are a low-cost way to improve student learning, persistence, retention and a sense of community," said Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Mathematics Associate Professor Susie Brooks
